VLC Castle Competition

Post by DeGobbi »

VLC Castle competition

The goal , build a great castle !

------------Rules----------

You will have 2 months to build.

Castle must be on a 32 x 32 or a footprint equal to that if you don’t have a baseplate. Over hangs are allowed as well as drawbridges but the base plates must be the square 32x32.

Minifig scale

Must have a 4 x 2 x 6 high stud entrance on an edge of the baseplate somewhere. This represents the entrance to your castle so minifigs can come and go. 4 studs wide , 2 studs deep and 6 studs high , in case you want to have clearance issues ( aka a Cave , rock over hangs , doorways) Once the path is 2 studs in you can do whatever you want , rope bridges , curved stairs , steeping stones. Also this entrance can be at any height on the castle as long as the side it is one is a sheer face

Image Hope that helps

Now the judging of the castles will be the same as for the microship, A ranking system from 1 to X , X being the number of entries . Once tallied, the lowest score wins

When judging people will be looking for the following

Overall impression

Color Scheming

Durability

Playability

Other rules , must not be taller then 3 feet , can’t weight more then 15 pounds ( these are to limit people with large collections from having an unfair advantage over people with smaller collections.

You are not limited to European castles either , Japanese , Chinese , Arabic , Nordic , Mayan are all open too . so be creative .

If you don’t know where to begin , look on brickshelf and mocpages for ideas.

Happy building , also if you have ideas or suggestions for this competition please post them

I have a couple of Q's...

Ok, why the choice of baseplate size? We should all be the same size.

The door size. What do you mean? I'm confused as to what you mean.

Thanks

I have to agree, we should keep it to a 32 x 32 square base.

- Does this include overhang?
- What if we want to build a drawbridge? Does it have to be within the 32?
- Do we get extra credit for automation?
- Color is not limited to gray I hope...

Just my two cents...

I'm sure overhang is fine. I would have the space past the end of the plate to be considered the moat if you want. Have a drawbridge that tucks in nice and neat.

quick Poll , do you think 32 by 32 is big enough , or you think it would be better on a 48x48 ?

Now if I was to build something like a tower, the parapets would overhang on all sides, this is still ok right?

What. The side that has the door almost always has an over hang. That's where they toss the burning oil from

I'm going to build what I want. If some rule disqualifies it, then so be it. My enjoyment must come first!

Yay! i get to build Castle!

i think Dave has some crazy plan to make all out castles fit together into some super castle. this is why we have door rules, like the moonbase.

is there a contest for next month too? Dave said this was for two months from now.

these are quite bigger then a 100 piece micro fig ship , and i really wanna give all the procrastinators enough time too. I plan on really spending some time on this one myself.

david is right about the door rules , i did wanna have it so you could connect them all for a brickshelf photo op . But dean and marc seem adamant on having overhangs on all sides so i guess thats what will happen . Because of the plateside i doubt there will be much landscaping on these as well , mostly big keeps and towers . ( i voted for the 48x48 for that reason )

It just seemed odd that you would request that only three sides have overhangs, and only one door.

If you really wanted to fit them all together, then maybe you should have thought about saying two doors... one for entrance, one for exit... to connect the many castles we will have...

Not that I am criticizing your rules. They are great, just seemed odd.

I am really looking forward to seeing what everyone builds, and I think we should give David a handicap... he's too good at castles... ha ha ha :rotflol:

I have been doing research on castles, both real ones and on Brickshelf. I got some really kewl ideas, and look forward to assembling the main floor over the weekend.

Cheers and good luck to all!

<This one is really kewl Dave, congrats!>

I suggest a mindstorm building contest next time, with Dean and Paul H as the judges.

That reminds me... please tell me that pre built HP castle sets will be looked down at?

Don't get me wrong, I love HP sets, but to just slap them together to make a castle is kinda weak if you ask me.

Now, if you build using the pieces of the sets, then that's kewl 8)

Robin - Oh sure, NOW you have a castle building contest ...

Well we had a micro ship space ship contest already , castle was next , soon to be pirate and maybe town after that. Technic/mindstorm , scuptures are all possiblties , its was basically decided by popular vote.
Gumby - Ok I'm finished. Here's my entry:
sorry its over the size weight and height maximums :P

Harry potter sets and any other prefab Offical lego sets will be looked down at .

Yes people can compete by photo , take alot so that way you won't recieve a poor rating based on poor photo quality and or lack of them
